Roz’s Book
An Ordinary Kid in Extraordinary Times follows a young girl’s struggle with the unusual changes and uncertainties attached to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reader is taken through this unusual period of time and learns about the virus itself, the changes it’s created, and the many ways it has altered the lives of families seen through the eyes of the book’s young main character. With humor, insight, and sensitivity, this lovely book offers an optimistic but honest look at these rather confusing times while showing the readers the positive side of change and offering them positive ways to increase their self-confidence, sense of security, and comfort during times of uncertainty and instability.

The Author’s Motive
Many people have asked me why I decided to write this book at this point in my life. The answer is pretty simple: I saw the pain and anxiety young children and their parents were experiencing all around me and felt compelled to do what I could to help. As a lifelong educator, lover of books, and a writing mentor, I knew writing a book could be my means of contribution. Children feel everything adults feel but lack the vocabulary to articulate their emotions and the experience to put their feelings in perspective or understand how scary times will affect them.
In my book. An Ordinary Kid in Extraordinary Times, I have addressed the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of a child in order to address their confusion, insecurity, and anxiety in a sensitive, optimistic, and humorous way. By incorporating information and feelings into the story, the readers gain a greater sense of understanding, control, and security along with the inquisitive and spunky protagonist. I hope my readers will enjoy the book as well as gain a new perspective on facing change and the unknown.
The Journey of Roz’s First Book
Making this book a reality, was not always so easy. Originally, I posted my story and painted illustrations on Facebook and was shocked and thrilled to receive so many positive and grateful comments. In addition, many readers suggested it would be smart to explore publishing it professionally. I had never thought of doing this originally, but before my doubts had time to take over, some of my daughter Jill’s friends sent me actual names of people in publishing, and that was enough to propel me forward on this journey.
After several weeks and numerous Zoom interviews and discussions, I decided to move ahead with Brown Books Publishing. With their help, I had fun investigating professional illustrators and was fortunate enough to sign Cynthia Meadows, one of my favorite children’s illustrators within my budget. After all, I couldn’t quite afford Eric Carle! From there, I worked with an editor on fine tuning my story itself to better fit my target audience of three to ten year olds. As a 35-year teacher of older children, we had to adjust some of my vocabulary and shorten the plot to fit the standards for children’s books.
This was a true collaboration, and once we were satisfied with the storyline, we moved on to Cynthia’s portion, creating the illustrations to fit each page of the twenty page book. Since this was my precious baby, Cynthia was kind enough to work with me on the look I envisioned and the personality I wanted to see in each character. She used my personally painted drawings as the foundation and moved from there with her magic artistry.
Step by step, the book came alive, and finally, all the illustrations were completed. Presently, the design pros are working on the integration of the storyline and the illustrations to form the final product. I am so excited to see the cover and the book itself. I will keep you posted as I travel through these last steps before the release in six to eight weeks. Stay tuned!
